Most notably used for its customizable to-do lists that solopreneurs use for both work and home life, you can assign tasks to team members or even family members to manage your life cohesively.

Asana allows you to set up recurring tasks, and “check one off” to-do lists. You can also use it as a project lead to assign tasks to members of your team.

Each task includes the ability to write out detailed notes/instructions, attach files, and make work plans easy to follow with calendar and list visualizations. It also includes an easy search feature. The free version offers plenty to work with for the solopreneur, and is an excellent tool!

How much time do you waste going back and forth to schedule a call or meeting with someone? Including the scheduling to set up an interview or touch base about a project? Calendly is a nifty tool that clients or team members can use to schedule time with you without the friction.

Of course, you will need to keep your calendar up to date. But the service will sync and identify times you can take calls within your established parameters. HootSuite

Social media marketing can be completely overwhelming if you’re reactive instead of being proactive. Luckily, Hootsuite is a free tool (at the introductory level) that allows you manage multiple networks/platforms and profiles, auto-schedule posts, batch upload posts months in advance, and monitor your entire social media ecosystem in one place.

HootSuite is also one of the very few tools that can integrate with Instagram. If it’s just you handling your social media, then building out a content calendar in advance is key to building your business with sanity intact!

Canva

You do not need to be a professional designer to create Instagram posts and Pinterest pins. Even the most clumsy of us can create images using Canva to drop into blog posts, marketing emails, or create custom buttons for our websites.

When you first start out, you’ll likely need to do basic editing. Edits such as resize images, add basic text or crop images for your various social channels. Canva has a relatively easy user interface so you can create custom images and marketing materials. It also allows you to store files in the cloud until you need to download.

  1. Great article! I’ll second how awesome Asana is. The free version is incredibly robust and a great way to keep a team of up to 15 people in track.

    One other option to consider for accounting software if your business is simple enough is YNAB. With a couple easy tweaks you can track and categorize your income and expenses. Set your categories up right and the reports make tax time a breeze.

    YNAB is cheaper than any of the options you listed, and if you already use it for personal expenses then it’s actually no extra cost to set up a second “budget” for your business.

    We use YNAB to run our small real estate investing business. We have 3 multifamily properties and we can easily track rents, expenses, and can output cashflow, noi etc.

    If your business doesn’t have a bunch of inventory to track it’s a great option!

  2. Great suggestions here. I plan to check a few of these out. I personally use Quickbooks (Desktop) and Canva and love those both.
    Some other ones I would recommend:

    For simple accounting software: Wave (waveapps.com). It’s free and pretty easy. You can send invoices by email, accept payments, and categorize transactions, and do a budget. It has all your accounting basics like P&L and balance sheets, and did I mention it is free! You can send professional invoices with your logo, and clients can pay direct through the invoice (ACH or credit card). Plus their fees for payment processing tend to be lower than other options I have seen.

    For emails: Boomerang for GMail. They have a free version, or paid options. It is for people who adopt zero inbox. I LOVE THIS!!!! It allows you to “mute” inbox emails and schedule them to come back to your inbox at a scheduled time. This is great if you are waiting to here back from someone but don’t want the email lingering in your inbox or some folder. It pops back into your inbox at your scheduled time. It also allows you to schedule emails out in advance, say if you need to follow up with someone in the future. I can not say enough good things about it.

    For marketing: I also love Ripl. They have desktop or an app. Ripl allows you to make picture videos and is a great entry level option for those who are looking to do videos for social media. The free version is sufficient, you just have an extra step by downloading the video and then uploading it to social media. Or you can do the paid version which allows you to schedule them out through Ripl. This option will also capture your analytics as well through Ripl.
